The European Commission has passed the law requiring TPMS on all new models since 2012 and all new cars since 2014 – almost the same like in the US. Many vehicles already include TPMS which makes the data available to other vehicle systems, but some older vehicles do not. Aftermarket TPMS are a convenient solution for owners of older vehicles including motorcycles, caravans and trucks.

How Does It Work

There are two types of TPMS; direct and indirect TPMS. In the first case, a battery-powered sensor is installed inside the wheel either banded to the wheel center, or directly attached to the valve stem. A wireless receiver activates the sensor and transmitter and this enables sending the information on tire ID, internal pressure and other data to the controller. This option provides better accuracy. However, aftery the battery life ends it cannot be replaced and therefore the TPMS has to be replaced. The sensor can last up to 10 years with proper power management.

Indirect TPMS is a cheaper solution, but it can provide less accurate information if the tires are replaced by larger or smaller ones, or if the tires wear unequally.
