Some drivers have problems with their tire pressure sensor, corroding and going bad.  Many of these sensors are connected to the valve stems on the tires.  Some drivers like to put metal caps for show on their valve stems, this creates a playground for corrosion.  When metals touch each other, such as the cap and the threads, many times corrosion will grow on these metals.  Sometimes it gets so bad that the cap will rust weld itself to the valve stem.  This makes it very difficult to remove the cap from the stem and many times the stem will break off.  This damages the sensors that are attached to the stem.

Other issues that can cause damaged sensors, are when manufactures use brass valve cores inside of the valve stem.  The sensor have aluminum and it will not mix with brass.  The reaction between the two metals will cause the valve core to weld itself to the stem and will be impossible to remove.  The sensor can be easily damaged if the tech is untrained or unaware of how to remove the entire stem.  Another issue that will cause the valve stems to corrode is water and salt off of the roadways.  The stem is nearly always in contact with water, and in the winter there are chemicals and salt that are put on the roads to melt the snow and ice.  When these items get on or into the valve stem corrosion is created.

Things That Can Help Prevent Corrosion

  • Be sure that your valve stem cover is make of rubber or plastic and not metal
  • Have nickel coated valve cores installed
  • Have your service technician install a service pack when you have new tires put on
  • Make sure that your service technician knows that your sensor is on your valve stem
  • Use a second generation aftermarket sensor

When hoods are supported by a strut mechanism it is the same struts present in the suspension of a motor vehicle that is designed to open hoods and support it for safety purposes.

Most vehicle owners will open the hoods of cars by releasing a cable just below the rim of the hood which will activate the mechanism for opening. It is best advised to work in a reverse order when installing the new rods which means that instead of placing the strut near the chassis rear, first attach it to the car hood. Be sure to fasten it to the bonnet securely making use of the necessary equipment to keep it in place. Once this has been completed, fasten the apparatus to the pin and the clip where it connected to the chassis.


You may proceed to determine whether it has been successfully changed by gently releasing the support and closing in a way that does not place a strain on the replaced mechanisms.
