In the 2000s a tpms system law was mandated due to multiple accidents and deaths due to tire malfunctions.  This was mandated as a safety for the drivers and passengers in a vehicle.  Unfortunately reports are showing that only 58% of all drivers do not know what these warning symbols mean and many of them just ignore them when they appear upon their dash.  Ignoring these warnings on your dash is defeating any safety purpose that has been mandated by law.  Improper tire air pressure or tires that are running too hot can be the cause of very serious accidents and injuries to the drivers and passengers.

Why Is This System Important?

When driving down the roadways, it is important to have the recommended tire pressure in your tires.  when you tire is running under inflated, it can cause a lot of damage.  When you tire is low on air, it can hamper the control of the vehicle, effect the cornering abilities of the vehicle and interfere with sudden movements or sharp steering of the vehicle.  As a tire is running low on air, there will be more flexibility and it will have a tendency to get overheated.  A tire that is running too hot, can cause damage to the walls of the tire, causing them to blow out or the tread to separate.

Some drivers have problems with their tire pressure sensor, corroding and going bad.  Many of these sensors are connected to the valve stems on the tires.  Some drivers like to put metal caps for show on their valve stems, this creates a playground for corrosion.  When metals touch each other, such as the cap and the threads, many times corrosion will grow on these metals.  Sometimes it gets so bad that the cap will rust weld itself to the valve stem.  This makes it very difficult to remove the cap from the stem and many times the stem will break off.  This damages the sensors that are attached to the stem.

Damaged Sensors

Other issues that can cause damaged sensors, are when manufactures use brass valve cores inside of the valve stem.  The sensor have aluminum and it will not mix with brass.  The reaction between the two metals will cause the valve core to weld itself to the stem and will be impossible to remove.  The sensor can be easily damaged if the tech is untrained or unaware of how to remove the entire stem.  Another issue that will cause the valve stems to corrode is water and salt off of the roadways.  The stem is nearly always in contact with water, and in the winter there are chemicals and salt that are put on the roads to melt the snow and ice.  When these items get on or into the valve stem corrosion is created.

Things That Can Help Prevent Corrosion

  • Be sure that your valve stem cover is make of rubber or plastic and not metal
  • Have nickel coated valve cores installed
  • Have your service technician install a service pack when you have new tires put on
  • Make sure that your service technician knows that your sensor is on your valve stem
  • Use a second generation aftermarket sensor

Keeping Your Sensor Safe

These sensors are of the fragile nature and are put in a rough area of your vehicle.  It is important to do the best that you can keeping them from becoming damaged.  When a sensor gets damaged, your air pressure system does not work properly.  You could get a low tire and that sensor will not alert you leaving you in a situation that you could blow a tire or wind up broke down along the side of the road with a flat tire.

Tires should be kept at a certain inflation level. If they drop below that level than they waste gas, put strain on the tire treads and other parts of the vehicle and, most importantly, are a huge safety concern. Tires naturally release some of their air pressure over time. This is really no surprise – after all, they’re in motion for over 13,000 miles per year for the average driver in the US and are often moving over rough and bumpy terrain. Naturally they can’t hold up to that kind of wear and tear for very long without losing some of their pressure. However, if you check your tires on a regular basis with a tire pressure gauge you can stay on top of maintenance and always be aware of when your tires need pumping up. It’s a simple, inexpensive tool that will go a long way to sustaining the life of your tires.

All in all, maintenance on your tires isn’t difficult with a Schrader tpms or similar. Many people think they have a sharp eye for when their tires look low but you can’t determine whether your tires are under or overinflated simply by examining them by eye – by that point they’re much too low, sometimes up to 50% underinflated. So monitor systems are equipped to handle the job for us and warn when one of the tires is 25% below the ideal air pressure. While 25% is when it starts becoming a safety concern, it’s still not great to drive when one of the tires is even 10% below the proper air pressure. Just 10% underinflated is going to start putting strain on the tires and affect your gas mileage.
